Linkedin: Good, Bad and Ideas (Updated)

As I love to socialize I've always loved social networks, while like everyone in the planet I use Facebook, though after I go on it for a few minutes I feel like I'm wasting my time...Asmallworld is another one I like, unfortunately the UX (user experience) is terrible...

Linkedin is probably my favorite social network as it's the most useful to me:
- I check the background of new industry people I meet
- it helps me to stay in touch with new acquaintances at conferences
- I can see if anyone I know changed jobs
- I always learn something new and relevant from status updates (I wish more would use it)
- Plus every time I use it I discover new cool functionalities...I recently upgraded to premium

Below are my thoughts around the Good, Bad and Ideas to improve Linked:

GOOD
- Great overall UI, colors and brand
- Basically the list above of why I like it, in one word: productive
- Almost everyone in my industry is on it

BAD
- Poor Mobile App iPhone (slow, no notifications to increase active usage, in person does not work, no group support, no job search, overall the app is not engaging
- No presence at major conferences at events (CES, CTIA, MWC) with Mobile Apps (like MWC Heat from Google www.heatmwc.com) here is a video to show you that Google is again taking over a smaller but way cooler Silicon Valley startup

- Profile: links you add in the description of your jobs are not clickable IDEAS
- Add notifications on website and mobile app (i.e. when someone comments or likes your post a-la-facebook) to increase active usage
- Partner with someone like CardScan www.cardscan.com/ so that right after cards are scanned invites to Linkedin are sent (or prepared)

- When adding email accounts give the opportunity to easily add only who is already on Linkedin - Partner with someone like Vistaprint www.vistaprint.com so that people can print Linkedin business cards when they are looking for jobs I got this idea after I saw the card of an ex colleague that looked almost like a Linkedin sponsored card. It even had the Linkedin logo! I can provide that if needed

Question
- NO Facebook connect...is it by design (avoid mixing private life with work)...or is it because of rivalry between Facebook and Linkedin?

Con la Nokia in testa

Vincenzo ha un traguardo: lavorare per la multinazionale finlandese. E grazie alla sua passione per le tecnologie e a un business project svolto a Helsinki è riuscito a farsi notare dai 'piani alti'

Lavorare alla Nokia per Vincenzo Belpiede non è un obiettivo, è un vero e proprio chiodo fisso. Da quando ha scoperto la passione per le tecnologie, oltre a quella per le relazioni internazionali (che lo ha portato in giro per il mondo durante gli anni dell’università), tanto ha fatto e tanto ha detto finché non ci è riuscito. E proprio in questi giorni entrerà a far parte del programma per giovani laureati del colosso finlandese della telefonia mobile.

"Lavorerò nel settore che si occupa dello sviluppo dei nuovi telefonini”, racconta Vincenzo, che a luglio ha conseguito la laurea di specializzazione in General Management alla Bocconi e durante i mesi estivi, da casa, ha già cominciato a ‘telelavorare’ per la divisione strategica della multinazionale. “Ho appena saputo che, dopo i primi sette mesi vicino a Monaco di Baviera, sarò mandato per due mesi in Finlandia, per altri sette mesi a Pechino e poi a Copenaghen e a San Diego”.

Come molti suoi coetanei, il 23enne di Cerignola (Puglia) è cresciuto a pane e telefonini: “Ho sempre avuto una passione sfrenata per la tecnologia e l’interesse per un’azienda come la Nokia è nato proprio grazie ai loro prodotti”. Ma, da neoeconomista, il fascino della telefonia mobile non si ferma al semplice desiderio di possedere l’ultimo ritrovato in fatto di tecnologia. “La Nokia ha 850 milioni di clienti nel mondo”, aggiunge, “e sta puntando ai mercati emergenti come la Cina e l’India. Oggi come oggi, il telefonino è utilizzato da 2 miliardi di persone nel mondo: la visione della multinazionale finlandese è di diffonderne l’uso anche tra gli altri due terzi della popolazione, permettendo loro di accedere per la prima volta a internet proprio grazie al cellulare. E’ un obiettivo affascinante e mi piacerebbe moltissimo lavorare per realizzarlo”. E, nel frattempo, è ben lungi dallo stare con le mani in mano: “Ho un blog personale nel quale tratto di temi inerenti la telefonia e i nuovi prodotti e curo uno dei blog interni alla Nokia, consultabile quindi solo dai dipendenti dell’azienda”.

Il sogno di approdare alla multinazionale finlandese, dunque, è ormai più che concreto. Già, ma perché proprio la Nokia? “Perché è una delle più grandi aziende del settore”, spiega, “ma soprattutto non ha mai perso la sua caratterizzazione di impresa europea. Il mio sogno è di diventare sia manager che imprenditore e nella nuova economia è fondamentale far parte di un network, ma non perdere i contatti con le proprie origini”.

Una cosa che di certo non manca a Vincenzo, insomma, è la motivazione. Il suo stesso percorso di vita sa molto di ‘self-made man’: a 15 anni, senza sapere una parola di inglese, lascia i genitori in Puglia e si trasferisce a Roma alla St. Stephen’s school, un liceo frequentato da giovani di 50 nazionalità diverse e dove le lezioni si tengono rigorosamente in inglese. “All’inizio è stato difficile”, racconta, “ma come si suol dire, ‘ciò che non ti uccide ti rende più forte’”.

L’esperienza così priva di confini geografici è ciò che serve a Vincenzo per aprire gli occhi sul mondo ed è ciò che lo spinge a scegliere il Degree in international economics and management (Diem), il corso di laurea triennale in inglese della Bocconi, durante il quale ha anche l’occasione di volare in Messico per otto mesi.

Tornato in Italia e consegnata la tesi (messa a punto proprio grazia all’esperienza messicana), Vincenzo ha già le valigie pronte per Belgrado: per quattro mesi la sua casa diventa l’ambasciata italiana in Serbia, dove si occupa dell’organizzazione di un evento internazionale diretto a sviluppare i rapporti commerciali tra i due paesi. Al rientro a Milano, si iscrive alla laurea specialistica di general management in lingua inglese della Bocconi e contemporaneamente dà sfogo alla sua passione per la tecnologia lavorando in part-time alla Zero9, azienda che si sviluppa contenuti per telefonini, dove analizza l’impatto sui profitti delle campagne pubblicitarie.

Il lavoro alla Zero9 lo tiene buono solo per quattro mesi, poiché nel frattempo Vincenzo sente forte l’esigenza di arricchire ulteriormente il suo bagaglio di esperienze internazionali, “più che inseguire il ritorno economico immediato”. “Durante il biennio specialistico ho aderito al programma Cems”, spiega Belpiede, “e dopo aver passato cinque mesi di stage alla Commissione economica per l’Europa delle Nazioni Unite, dove ho partecipato a un progetto sull’efficienza e la sostenibilità energetica e sulle energie rinnovabili, ho avuto la possibilità di partecipare col Cems a un business project di Nokia, a Helsinki, nel quale ho valutato gli effetti della diffusione delle applicazioni consumer (come Msn o Skype) all’interno dell’azienda”.

Grazie a questo progetto imprenditoriale, Vincenzo si è guadagnato l’attenzione dei ‘piani alti’ della sua azienda preferita ed è stato selezionato tra mille candidati di tutto il mondo. E ora che ha messo un piede dentro, anche se da neolaureato, il giovane pugliese è più motivato che mai, anche se è conscio del fatto che “quello della telefonia è un mercato estremamente flessibile, dunque bisogna essere pronti e prepararti a muoversi in una dimensione globale”. D’altronde, a girare il mondo, lui c’è già abituato.

In all machines to pay for parking in Helsinki you...

1. Can pay by credit card

2. 1h = €3 (no wonder why they expect you to pay also by credit card ;)

3. They even though that people will actually park their cars for 4 minutes (paying 20cents)

For an Italian this is all pretty hard to believe and at first sight it was even pretty hilarious...

The following article from the Helsingin Sanomat is titled "Helsinki wants to be cleaner, safer, more fun".....can anyone tell me how you can make a city fun by adding more trash cans in parks?
Could not find in the text any other indication of policies that would make Helsinki more fun....
how about letting discos close when they want not at h03:30?

....just an idea...probably would avoid that sistematically at the time discos close thousands of drunk people are messing around in the streets since in the disco Finns behave quite well even if they are completely trashed....which is pretty much always the case when they go out ;)

actually I'm now wondering how you can make it safer with trash bins again...I don't think the Mayor should worry too much about safety....I think it's the safest I have seen in my whole life!

Helsinki wants to be cleaner, safer, more fun

More trash containers, ashtrays, and guidance in store

The City of Helsinki is increasing the number of public trash containers. Signs emphasising the virtues of cleanliness will be posted in parks and along walkways, and new containers for deposit bottles are being set up in different locations.
The investment is part of a city plan aimed at making the city more enjoyable, safer, more attractive, and more conducive to employment.
The aim is to have a city in which it is fun to be, said Mayor Jussi Pajunen at a press conference announcing the new cleanliness campaign of the Public Works Department of the City of Helsinki.
This year 130 new deep waste bins will be set up in Helsinki's parks. Dubbed "Molochs" because of their large volume, the bins, which look quite ordinary from the outside, extend below the surface with a volume of up to five cubic metres.
A few hundred of the deep containers have been placed around the city so far.
New types of containers for empty deposit bottles and cans are being set up in parks, with signs inviting those who make extra money by returning deposit containers to help themselves. The aim is to fight both glass shards and other litter, as bottle collectors would no longer need to break open trash containers to get at a bottle.

Another upcoming change is that the city plans to take over maintenance of trash containers at bus stops and on sidewalks by the spring of 2009. Until now such containers have been the responsibility of the owners of the adjacent buildings.
Some property owners have shirked their responsibilities, which is has led to insufficient numbers and overfilling of the containers.
Raimo K. Saarinen, head of the Street and Park Division of the city's Public Works Department says that new smoking legislation that takes effect in June might force the city to increase the number of public ashtrays, as smoking increasingly moves from inside restaurants to the streets.
The city also plans to conduct a survey on what Helsinki residents think about the litter problem.

Increasing volumes of litter are a problem in other Finnish and European cities. The phenomenon is seen to be linked with the spread of disposable packaging, and an emphasis on a lifestyle focusing on the individual. At the same time, there has been a rise in the overall feeling of insecurity.
"For instance, the lack of cleanliness and the feeling of insecurity at Metro stations on the outskirts of the city often coexist", Mayor Jussi Pajunen says.
He adds that the issue goes beyond the proliferation of trash containers.
"This is not a project, but rather a state of will", Pajunen explained.
Or as Raimo K. Saarinen puts it: "No amount of money would be sufficient for keeping the city tidy by cleaning it up. We need education, guidance, and changed attitudes."
